John Lennon: The Boy Who Became A Legend by Michael Hill (edited by David Bedford)

A school friend of John Lennon from the age of 5 at Dovedale, and through Quarry Bank, Michael introduced John to the music of Little Richard. In John’s words, it was that act by Michael that took John from Liverpool to the rest of the world.

John Lennon said: “Little Richard was one of the all-time greats. The first time I heard him, a friend of mine (Mike Hill) had been to Holland and brought back a 78 with ‘Long Tall Sally’. That’s the music that brought me from the provinces of England to the world. That’s what made me what I am.”

The foreword was written by Rod Davis, banjo player with The Quarry Men: “Michael’s recollections have that authentic flavour which, unlike most Beatle-related writing, comes from a person who was actually there during John Lennon’s younger years and who lived through them alongside him.

Thanks Michael–you brought it all back to me.

Rod Davis, The Quarrymen”
